The Foundation Stone
#whsfridayfact - The Foundation Stone
This 'stone' started it's life at the Portslade, Windlesham House School and was then relaid in it's current home on 1st November 1934.
The staff and boys were transported in coaches from Portslade to Highden. The boys were seated on tiered stands in the dining room to watch the ceremony through the windows. The stone was laid by the partially-retired Mrs Charles (Grace Scott Malden) and beneath it were laid six coins, newly-minted at the time: a crown, half-crown, florin, shilling, sixpence and a penny. Mrs Charles used the same trowel she had used at the foundation of the Portslade site.
